Blind Spot

Blind Spot by Chandler McGrew is a mysterious thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The book begins with Jake Crowley, a cop in Houston, Texas meeting up with an informant in an attempt to bring down the notorious Torrio brothers, a pair of brothers who run the underground crime syndicate in his area. Things go horribly wrong and Jake finds himself injured, with a slew of unexplained brutalized dead bodies on the beach, including one of the Torrio brothers, killed by Jake himself. Jake's immediate thought is that the "Crowley curse" has followed him to Houston, even though he left Crowley, Maine some 14 years before to escape it.

He and his partner, Cramer, head to Maine not long after the events on the beach, mainly because his uncle was recently murdered and he feels he must face the past he was trying to escape. Unfortunately, trouble follows him, as Jimmy Torrio isn't going to let his brother's murderer get away with it. Back home in Maine, Jake runs into Mandi, the love of his life whom he abruptly left all of those years before and he discovers she has a fascinating son named Pierce who was born blind and deaf, yet is quite brilliant. Before Jake barely has time to catch his breath, a terrible storm hits the small town and everyone is in danger of flash flooding. To complicate matters, strange whispering can be heard in the trees and on the wind of the storm and with it seems to come violence and destruction. Somehow, Pierce is connected to all of this as he can hear the whispers too, despite his being deaf. Could the Crowley curse be rearing its ugly head once again? One thing is for sure, Virgil the sheriff will have his hands full between a deadly storm, a menacing "something" that is causing violent murders to occur in his sleepy town, and a vengeful mobster on the loose. If those close to him are going to survive the night, Jake is going to have to face his family curse once and for all, complete with the horrible memories he has kept buried deep down since he was a child.

I really enjoyed Blind Spot. It was the first Chandler McGrew novel I've read, but it won't be the last. It kept me glued to my iPad as I couldn't wait to read what happened next. I especially loved Cramer and his Voodou grandmother, "Memere," but all of the characters are well defined and interesting to get to know as you make your way through the book. Oddly enough, I read most of this book during a terrible storm where I had no electricity and it made it all the more spooky as the characters were fighting the pounding rain and encroaching flood waters. If you get creeped out by a little bit of mysticism, leave your lights on while you read. Personally, I loved it and can't wait to read Cold Fear, so look for that review soon. Highly recommended as a great summer read.
