Immortal at the Edge of the World

Immortal at the Edge of the World is the fantastic conclusion to the Immortal trilogy by Gene Doucette. The protagonist is once again Adam, or Francis Justinian, depending on who is asking, a man who has managed to live thousands and thousands of years, amassing great wealth and life experiences. His driving force these days is to find the elusive red-haired woman who often appears in his life, only to vanish as soon as he pursues her.

He begins his quest by speaking with prominent physicists who might be able to explain this phenomenon, only to learn about the possibility of parallel worlds. This propels him on an around-the-world trip in an attempt to find a missing object, one a very old friend told him about some hundreds of years ago. Adam discovered the existence of this astrolabe from a goblin named Hsu who once came to his rescue during Adam's travels as a merchant on the Silk Road. He and Hsu became dear friends and business partners through some odd occurrences, but more importantly, Hsu was convinced of the existence of a fairy realm and the ability of the astrolabe to get him there. So now we have Adam, along with his trusty pixie Iza and a new deadly but luscious bodyguard named Mirella setting off to find the object in question.

Meanwhile, Adam receives an interesting video of the final events of Hellenic Immortal which eventually causes him to realize that someone is hunting him and he is falling into step with exactly what they want, as he searches for the mysterious redhead. The downside to this is that his ex-girlfriend Clara finds herself involved and she wants to be as far as possible from Adam as she can. Could she be harboring a deep, dark secret? With these two, who knows. Just be certain that sparks will fly once Adam and Clara are reunited, with the lovely Mirella in tow. This "three's a crowd" can be quite dangerous, not to mention the deadly redhead... Suffice it to say that Adam gets a few much needed answers to his burning questions from Red, along with some fairly mind-blowing info from Clara. Will everyone live happily ever after? You'll just have to read it to find out.

I thoroughly enjoy the way Doucette goes between the past and the present to play out the story. Once again, he weaves an intricate and brilliant tale about a lovable cast of characters, especially Adam, the fun-loving, alcoholic immortal. Some characters are lost in this story and those losses hit hard, I must admit. I am also really sorry to see this storyline and these characters come to an end as the trilogy comes to a close. I don't mind saying that I'd love to see more of Adam's adventures, both past and present/future if Gene Doucette wants to revisit them. Immortal at the Edge of the World is just as great as the first two books in the series and I highly recommend it.
