The Flintstones: Bedrock Bowling: Setting Up for a Strike

The Flintstones: Bedrock Bowling is very reminiscent of its cartoony counterpart. The levels definitely have the ole Bedrock feel to them, especially the ?Flooded? and ?Pool? levels. I was also reminded of Bugs Bunny Lost in Time. This is an Alpha version and in its early stages, but the graphics are coming along nicely, and Fred surely looks like Fred. Other characters will be playable in the final (but aren?t in this version), and from what I?ve seen in the Options menu, they are looking good too. The background music is well done, but not very noticeable. It adds to the overall feel of each level, but doesn?t overpower it.

Well, from this Alpha version, we can get a pretty good idea of what the game is going to be like. Single Player and also Multiplayer modes are available. At this time, the Multiplayer mode does not require a multitap, as up to four players take turns using the same controller. I?m not sure if it will support a multitap when it?s released. Also, this build did not support analog or dual shock, but again, we?ll have to wait and see if the final does. I don?t know what percentages complete this build was, but the basic concepts were there. There?s still a lot of clipping in the graphics, but that is to be expected. Oh, and there is no jump button. However, you may find yourself searching for one from time to time. During gameplay, whenever I hit a button, the game would kick me out to the main screen. Hehe. You learn fast not to randomly hit buttons when testing alphas. :)

The gameplay reminded me of a cross between the old Nintendo game, Marble Madness, a miniature golf game, and skating a half-pipe. It?s a cool concept. The player controls Fred as he barrels through numerous wacky locations, knocking over bowling pins, various power-ups, and unsuspecting creatures. The speed is blinding until you figure out how to slow Fred down. If you liked Marble Madness, a great game from days past, or games of that sort, you will probably get a kick out of Bedrock Bowling.

On my Alpha version, the players which will be available are Fred, Barney, Pebbles, Bam-Bam, and possibly Dino (he wasn?t selectable, but was there nonetheless). So far, the levels available on the Alpha version are the Quarry, Tar, Pool, Crystal Mine and Flooded. The Pool level is a blast as it has a skateboard feel to it. In Flooded, you get to go whizzing past Mr. Slate?s office. What a hoot!
