Alibi is a 2003 mini-series about a series of events that spirals out of control after a party. Greg Brentwood (Michael Kitchen) is a stressed out businessman struggling to maintain the lifestyle that he and his wife Linda (Phyllis Logan, The Good Karma Hospital) have enjoyed over the years. He throws an elaborate and expensive surprise party for their 19th wedding anniversary, complete with caterers and the works, and everyone is there, including Greg's best friend and business partner, Martin. Little does Greg know that Martin is having an affair with his beloved wife Phyllis, something that one of the caterers, Marcey Burgess (Sophie Okonedo, Hotel Rwanda), happens to spy through a secret caress between the couple. This comes into play later on, when Marcey returns to the Brentwood house after the party because she realizes she left one of her bags there, the important one with her phone and such, and stumbles upon Greg trying to drag the body of - you guessed it - Martin, who is clearly dead.

Marcey is horrified and Greg is too, and little by little, Marcey comes to believe Greg's story about the fact that the two were in an argument and Martin fell, fatally hitting his head. Neurotic Greg is so upset that Marcey attempts to calm him and fix things, fearing the police won't believe his story, as it took much convincing for her to believe it, especially after witnessing the affection between Phyllis and Martin. So the two concoct a way for Martin to have "died" in a car accident, by pushing his car off the road. Naturally, things degrade from there and include the car bursting into flames, a witness who saw the car, and much more. Needless to say, nothing goes as expected or planned.

As Greg and Marcey try to fix the fixing they've already done, more chaos occurs, especially when Linda catches Marcey at Greg's place of business, which he co-owned with Martin. To cover things up, Marcey acts as if the temp agency has sent her and Greg plays along, since he was supposed to hire some help anyway, so now Marcey has a job working in Greg's office, even though she already has a full-time job as a civil servant, in addition to the side catering gig. To keep up the ever-growing cover story, Marcey works at the office doing payroll, but discovers things might not have been kosher with the financial side of the business, something Martin was always in charge of, which might begin to explain why Greg never seemed to have any money, despite working like a mule. As more and more things get uncovered, by Greg, Marcey, and eventually by Linda as well, the mire grows deeper. Will things ever go back to normal with the Brentwoods and with Marcey? Probably not, but that might just be a good thing...

Alibi is a dark comedy with copious amounts of drama, some thrills and mystery, and just a touch of romance and it manages to be sad, sweet, and funny all at the same time. It's a fun little mystery with some interesting twists and turns, but the best bits are the interpersonal relations between two people who might never have met one another were it not for that fateful night.
