Nerdland is an adult-themed animated film that depicts two average-joes as they try to achieve their 15 minutes of fame. In concept, this sounds like a good setup for a hijinks-filled film, but the extremely crass nature of the movie's comedy will turn off more people than it will appeal to.

John (Paul Rudd, Ant-Man, I Love You, Man) and Elliot (Patton Oswalt, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Ratatouille) find that their impending 30th birthdays mean they have to admit that their lives are in a rut and their plans don't seem to be going all that well. One is an aspiring actor, the other is hoping to break into the screenwriting business, but so far, neither has gained any traction in those fields.

Deciding not to give up on life, the pair become determined to do whatever it takes to become famous in the next 24 hours. Their hope is to not only make their mark on the world, but also impress their two crushes, clerks who work at a mall clothing store, Sally (Kate Micucci, Scrubs) and Linda (Riki Lindhome, Last House on the Left). Their day-long journey will start with attempts of altruism (filmed, of course, so that they can get credit), sympathy (by baiting cops to beat them) and eventually deciding to take a much darker turn towards infamy.

In their quest, the pair will not only rely on the hopeful love of the two ladies, but a friend of theirs that owns a local collectibles store. Known only as The Nerd King (stand-up comedian Hannibal Buress), they will use the man's seemingly vast resources to supply them with various necessities as the night goes on, and The King has quite a few unusual assets at his disposal.

While Nerdland is unrated, it would easily get a Mature or possibly NC-17 rating. The film doesn't shy away from nudity, adult situations and extreme violence. In fact, at one point, the pair wish to desensitize themselves from violence by watching the bloodiest moments from film history, and so as not to leave the audience out of the experience, the video John and Elliot watch is shown to the viewers. It's an intense segment of the film, and while the fact that it is animated allows some disassociation from actual violent acts, the extremeness of these scenes renders that disassociation null and void.

Nerdland seems to be designed to appeal to the same audience that enjoys Adult Swim's more extreme shows such as Superjail!. If the kind of humor found in those shows appeals to you, then Nerdland is most likely right up your alley. Otherwise, it's best just to pass on this animated film.
