Detectorists: Series 2 returns once more to open the door to the quirky world of metal detecting. At the forefront of the Danebury Metal Detecting Club (DMDC) are friends Lance (Toby Jones, Hunger Games, The Girl) and Andy (Mackenzie Crook, Pirates of the Caribbean), who have experienced a number of changes since we last saw them. For starters, Lance has finally let go of his ex-wife and has moved on from his failed marriage and even has a new young woman in his life, although he seems to be keeping her a secret; whereas Andy is quite busy with 3-month-old baby Stan and the search for a job, having recently graduated in Archaeology. Wife Becky (Rachael Stirling) is teaching to support the family, but yearns for the adventure the pair dreamed of before Stan arrived and has recently introduced the idea of the family going to Botswana, her to teach and him to work on a dig in progress there. Andy is fairly disinclined to leave the comfort of England and his detecting friends, though. Mother-in-Law Veronica (Diana Rigg, Game of Thrones) is always there to help with baby Stan and give her Anti-Andy opinion, naturally.

The series begins with a sequence of a group of knights on horseback, clearly with ill intentions, and a fearful monk gathering up some treasures and burying them next to a large rock. This site happens to be right in the area Lance and Andy are detecting and we get to see the gem teasingly gleaming under the earth nearly every episode, although Lance and Andy are clueless to it's existence. Instead of focusing on this elusive piece, a new mystery arises when a German named Peter (Daniel Donskoy) joins the DMDC, ostensibly looking for his grandfather's downed WWII plane, in order to pay his respects. Sophie (Aimee-Ffion-Edwards) immediately offers to help search through newspaper articles at the library, but Andy is suspicious of this interloper. As Sophie and Peter grow closer, the potential dig site grows further away, as it lies on the mayor's land and he is adamantly against anyone digging there. But perhaps unearthing a little secret of the mayor's own might help the group invoke some sway with him.

Detectorists: Series 2 is just as delightful as the first run, even more so, actually, because the viewer gets to see some really cool things happen to Lance and Andy. They are great characters and it's nice to see how their characters are being fleshed out and maturing. Of course, the other interesting members of the group are back, as well, and we get a little more screen time with them, also.

Special features include a behind the scenes featurette with interviews with the cast and crew, a photo gallery, and most importantly, a Christmas Special episode that is a follow-up to the delightful season finale. I am especially happy this was included because you get to see what happens after... I'll leave it at that.

Overall, Detectorists: Series 2 is a delight. It's a British comedy of the wry and witty variety, yet it conveys its humor quietly. It's not in-your-face comedy, but you will find yourself smiling all the way through as these entertaining characters dig their way into your heart. Here's to hoping Mackenzie Crook is up to writing, directing, and acting in a third season in this adorable series.
