Helix: Season 2 picks up about a year after the devastating events at Arctic Biosystems. Dr. Julia Walker (Kyra Zagorsky) is now a high-ranking exec at the Ilaria Corporation, and despite Dr. Alan Farragut's (Billy Campbell) murderous best attempts to find her via any immortal he comes across, he's come up empty-handed. Scenes in this season switch between the present and some 30 years later and respectively follow the current CDC team tracking a new outbreak and Dr. Walker looking for the beginning of a dangerous new virus that is killing immortals, including her.

The CDC team consists of Dr. Sarah Jordan (Jordan Hayes), now nicknamed "Hot Zone" because of her desire to throw herself into the scariest of projects, thanks to her immortality; newcomer Dr. Kyle Sommer (Matt Long), who has a secret agenda; and the team is led by Dr. Peter Farragut (Neil Napier), who as you will recall from last season is secretly working for Ilaria. The team finds themselves stranded at St. Germain Island, a few hours off the coast of Seattle, where it seems this dangerous new disease may have originated. It turns people into psychotic murderers or "mycotics" and could devastate the world should it make it off the island. To make matters worse, a cult of sorts lives on the island, headed up by a mysterious man called Michael (Steven Weber) and the cult's agenda may be more dangerous than the disease they are hunting. To further complicate things, Dr. Alan Farragut is also living in the commune, masquerading as one of the followers, but why?

Meanwhile, 30 years in the future, Dr. Julia Walker has come to St. Germain Island on a search all her own. There, she will meet both new people and some old acquaintances as well, as she tries to unravel just what exactly transpired on the island all those years ago, and she must do so quickly, as her own time is running out, along with all of the remaining immortals.

Helix: Season 2 is very twisty-turny and a bit confusing, at times. As cult leader Michael, Steven Weber is incredibly creepy and his flock of devoted followers, especially Anne (Severn Thompson) and Amy (Alison Louder), the women who compose his inner circle, are pretty darn manipulative in their own right. This season has more than its share of shocking moments, something Helix is known for, all the while playing weird and out of place background music amidst the horror. I enjoyed Helix: Season 2, but not quite as much as I liked the first season. As everything played out, it was a satisfying end to the season and the show, but I wish there had been a featurette or something that gave a little bit more insight into where the show had planned to go and what might have happened had it survived. As it is, the ending will leave you shocked, but you will probably have a few questions. The only special features are deleted scenes that you can watch right after each episode, which is nice, and also an amusing gag reel.

If you saw Helix: Season 1 and want to see how everything plays out, definitely check out Helix: Season 2. It doesn't have quite the punch of the first season, but it is still cool to see what happens to the characters.
