The two big episodes of this DVD are "Twilight’s Kingdom," Part 1 and Part 2. This is the big culmination of everything Twilight’s been going through in Season 4 since she gained princess status in the last season. Basically, Twilight’s been wondering just what being a princess means, beyond the obvious, "I’ve got wings now." Luna has her role with pony’s dreams, Celestia has her job raising the sun, and Cadence has her job protecting the Crystal Kingdom. All the while, there’s a mysterious box that sprouted up by the Tree of Harmony with 6 keyholes that Twilight Sparkle needs to unlock.

Tirek, a magic-stealing villain, makes his appearance in the 2-part episodes. With a huge threat to the Alicorn princesses and their magic, the princesses come to a hard decision to imbue Twilight with all their magic in order to throw Tirek off their trail. When the powered-up Twilight meets Tirek, the ensuing battle is epic. The comparisons to Dragon Ball Z are impossible to ignore, as Twilight and Tirek exchange huge magical attacks and break apart the earth. Perhaps that makes the conclusion of the battle all the more disappointing; Twilight ends up tapping into the magic of friendship, and this is where we see all the ponies get their new "Rainbow" looks. But that’s pretty much it. They don’t continue the epic fight, rather, they just all float there and send a few rainbow beams in Tirek’s direction. Still, it’s a great set of episodes with some exciting moments, even beyond just the fight itself.

What would have made this DVD even better would be if they included all the episodes where the ponies gained their keys. Each pony had to go through a trial of some sort to gain a special item that became their key. Those episodes were kind of fun, because you never knew where the keys were going to come from. This DVD includes a couple of those episodes, and then throws in "Pinkie Apple Pie" as a filler episode. It is a good episode, with Pinkie Pie getting a bit out of her element and spending time with the Apple family. It just feels ridiculous that they couldn’t have filled out this DVD with the appropriate episodes.

Still, "Rarity Takes Manehattan" and "It Ain’t Easy Being Breezies" are two key-finding episodes that are included on this DVD, and they are good. In Rarity’s episode, she gets a shot at fame with a big fashion show. She meets an old friend, but finds herself betrayed by her own generosity. With her element being Generosity, it takes some courage to remain true to it and earn her key. In Fluttershy’s episode, "It Aint Easy Being Breezies," Fluttershy learns that living up to her element of Kindness is not easy either. This is also the episode where the Breezies show up for the first time in this series, so that is reason enough for it to become a fan favorite.

So yep, this is another compilation DVD with random episodes, but it’s better than most. The Keys of Friendship in My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic: Keys of Friendship are enough of a cohesive theme in Season 4 to make this DVD easy to compile. There’s a bonus Sing-Along, as well, which is also pretty usual for these DVDs. Overall, this is a pretty good way to get your Season 4 fix, if you’re needing one.
