My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic: A Dash of Awesome is yet another DVD compilation from the My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic series. This time it’s all about your favorite athletic pony, Rainbow Dash. As a Rainbow Dash fan, it’s hard for me not to like this particular DVD. But again, it’s a compilation, and you might know by now that I’m not the biggest fan of these kinds of DVDs.

The DVD starts out with "May the Best Pet Win," which is all about Rainbow Dash picking the coolest, awesomest, best pet ever. She holds a contest of speed, agility, and several other talents. Several animals are eager for the title including a bat, a butterfly, an eagle, and a turtle. This episode was actually pretty cute, and the twist at the end really showcases Rainbow Dash’s element, which is loyalty.

"The Mysterious Mare Do Well" is another clever episode that emphasises some of Dash’s less appealing qualities. While she is very talented and athletic, she tends to let pride go to her head a bit too much. A mysterious mare that seems to have a horn, wings, and sometimes is an earth pony steps in and starts doing heroic deeds, to Rainbow Dash’s dismay. The mystery of the "superhero" mare and Rainbow Dash’s personal turn around make the episode worth watching until the end.

"Read it and Weep" is also another favorite of mine, and a favorite for many fans, as it spawns a story within a story for the My Little Pony world. Dash begins the episode with a broken wing, and has to spend several days on bedrest. Twilight Sparkle suggests an exciting, adventurous book to pass the time called "Daring Do and the Quest for the Sapphire Stone." Dash does everything she can not to read the book, but eventually gives in. The book is about an Indiana Jones style story about a pegasus pony named Daring Do. She seeks treasure buried deep in mysterious ruins, fights wild animals, escapes traps, and generally is awesome in the eyes of Rainbow Dash. The episode is not only great because of Rainbow Dash’s discovery of reading, but as a nice story about how Twilight and Dash now have a new way to grow closer as friends.

It’s great that "Daring Don’t" is also included on this DVD. It’s just so dangerously close to continuity for one of these DVDs, it’s quite amazing. Either way, "Daring Don’t" continues Rainbow Dash’s reading adventures. Upon finding out that the next book has been delayed, Dash comes up with a slightly obsessive plan to find the author and help her finish the book faster. It would be too much fun to spoil what happens next, so I’ll just leave things here and say that the author, A.K. Yearling, has plenty of secrets up her sleeve. The quest to see the end of this book turns into the ultimate adventure for Rainbow Dash.

Overall, I love this DVD, but then that’s probably because I love Rainbow Dash. Dash is all action, and a lot less singing than the rest of her friends so it's amusing that there's still a bonus Sing-Along. As we’ve become accustomed to with these compilations, that’s it for special features. These compilations provide for a slightly cheaper way to pick up a few episodes on DVD, but that’s about it. If you’re waiting for a full season set of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, you’ll have to look elsewhere. But if you really just want a hit of Rainbow Dash, you can’t do much better than this DVD.
