At the end of last season, Elena (Nina Dobrev) died because she made Stefan (Paul Wesley) save Matt (Zach Roerig) before her. She died with vampire blood in her system, Damon’s blood. Vampire Diaries: The Complete Fourth Season starts right there. They have a single day for Bonnie to try and figure out how to "cure" her before she has to feed and transition. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is his usual grumpy self since Elena chose Stefan for good. Of course, now she can remember things that Damon made her forget, like the fact that he loves her. Elena realizes that she is in love with him too. She still cares about Stefan, but she’s just not in love with him. This could have something to do with the fact that Elena is sire bonded to Damon and it doesn’t take them too long to figure this out. This sire bond is really going to throw a wrench in Damon and Elena’s relationship as she insists that she really loves him, but he thinks that it is only because of the bond and once that is broken, she’ll go back to Stefan. The real trick here is figuring out how to break the sire bond.

There is apparently a solution to this problem: a cure. Connor Jordan (Todd Williams) shows up in town hunting vampires. He’s quite dangerous and he’s one of the five. The five hunters have been around for 1000 years, a new one emerging when a current one dies. Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) can see Connor’s tattoo which means he has the blood of a vampire hunter. The tattoo supposedly is a map that leads to a cure of vampirism. Given that Stefan is determined to cure Elena, he’ll do anything for it. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is also still around. With Elena a vampire, he doesn’t have her blood to make more hybrids. This means that Klaus will do anything to find a cure for her as well. Stefan, being the good guy that he is, just wants to cure her so she can live the life that she was supposed to. Obviously everyone wants to cure poor Elena, who isn’t happy being a vampire, so you’d think it would be easy. Things aren’t ever that easy and there is a huge price to pay. Not to mention a lot of past enemies, like Katherine (Nina Dobrev) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies) are going to show up out of the woodwork looking for it for their own reasons.

Bonnie (Kat Graham) angers the spirits in the very first episode trying to save Elena. They take away her ability to work her normal nature magic spells. Miraculously, the professor who took over for her mother, Professor Atticus Shane (David Alpay) shows up to help her figure out how to use magic again. Shane has a hidden agenda, one that is going to possibly bring about the end of the world as it is now. Bonnie is going to have her hands full this season trying to figure out who she can trust, but Bonnie is even more powerful than anyone ever realized.

Jeremy becomes a new hunter and he needs to kill vampires to reveal the map to the cure. Jeremy has gotten really badass with his new hunter powers. He’s really bulked up. Matt seems to have a bigger role this season. He steps in as Jeremy’s roommate and training partner. He’s still the object of Rebekah’s (Claire Holt) affections. I really feel bad for Rebekah. Granted, she can be an evil bitch, but she’s just really sad and lonely. All she wants is to find love and she continually chooses the wrong man. I would love to see her end up happy, so maybe she’ll learn how to be good this time. She’s like the female version of Damon.

Caroline (Candice Accola) gets better and better every season. She started out whiny in the very beginning of the show, but being a vampire has really made her even more awesome. I really think she’s the only one of the group with a brain sometimes, other than Damon. She thought Tyler (Michael Trevino) was dead at the end of last season, but she’s elated when she finds out that he’s still alive. Unfortunately, he’s still on Klaus’s bad side, so he can’t stay in town. Klaus is also still in love with Caroline. This season has a whole bunch of complex love triangles!

The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Fourth Season comes with the DVD, Blu-Ray, and Ultraviolet version all in one set. If you don’t have a Blu-Ray player, the other version will do, but if you can view it, I highly recommend the Blu-Ray discs. The quality is just so much more crisp and vibrant. In a show full of blood, bright colors, and loud screams, you really want the high quality in both audio and video. The good news is that all of the features are available on both DVD and Blu-Ray, so either way you can view them all. There are some really interesting features. I really love shows that do behind the scenes which involve the cast and crew as it is neat to see their ideas on things. Plus there are quite a few deleted scenes that are always interesting. Some of them have information that I would have liked left in, if time permitted.

If you’re a fan of The Vampire Diaries you’re definitely going to want to pick up The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Fourth Season as so many things have changed in this season. The one thing that hasn’t changed is the acting. Nina Dobrev, in particular, is completely amazing in her ability to switch characters and emotions flawlessly. If you’ve never seen the series, you should most definitely go pick it up today!
