The Killing God: The Great God's War - Book 3
Publisher: Berkley Books

The stage has been set in the first two books, and the final book in The Great God's War trilogy, The Killing God picks up by cluing the reader in a bit to what became of a character who was unaccounted for leading up to this final installment. Elgart's time away from the careful scrutiny of the reader has been busy, it seems, and he discovers useful information about the nature of the Great God Rile's acolytes and their magic, as well as possibly securing a valuable ally for the coming war.

As expected, the Great God Rile's attack begins at the Bay of Lights, where General Klamath has prepared defenses, but things don't go exactly as Klamath had planned and the fighting becomes chaotic and full of unexpected turns on both sides. I enjoyed reading the events of the defense of the Bay of Lights; the action is fast and the tactics are clever.

Another character we've not heard from in a while is the mysterious Set Ungabwey. We will come to find out that the actions he takes in the last minutes of his life could have unexpected benefit for King Bifalt, the Last Repository and, ultimately, the world.

The whole while that the Great God's war plays out, we also watch the relationship between Queen Estie and King Bifalt develop and evolve. King Bifalt loves Queen Estie and hates magic in equal measure. When Bifalt discovers that (previously unbeknownst to her) Estie has the potential to wield a magical decimate, he is distraught. Estie seeks to discover more about her unawakened magical ability, and will have to choose between not having access to her decimate and being helpless to aid King Bifalt and accepting the horrible cost of awakening her decimate... being completely and utterly deaf to any sound around her.

I really enjoyed reading the third and final installment of The Great God's War. It revealed what had happened to some characters since we last saw them, gave deeper glimpses into some characters, showed further character development for King Bifalt and Queen Estie, as well as their relationship, and had lots of interesting and exciting battle sequences.

If you've read the previous two books in the series, I wholeheartedly recommend picking up and diving into The Killing God. If you have been waiting for the series to wrap up before dipping a toe in, then let me be the first to recommend coming all in... the water's fine. Just make sure to read them in order. Highly recommended.
