Mobile Monitor
Score: 90%
Developer: Interact
Device Type: Accessory

Function:

InterAct?s Mobile Monitor is for the PSOne specifically, not the original PlayStation. The reason for this is that the PSOne was designed with mobility in mind. InterAct?s Mobile Monitor helps the PSOne live up to its destiny by fitting nicely into the back of the PSOne with some thumbscrews and then folding over the unit. The clamshell shape of this assembled setup is slick and compact, and helps to protect the screen when not in use.

Performance:

The Mobile Monitor for the PSOne features a 5 inch LCD screen (measured diagonally), matches the PSOne both in color and style, and can be powered by an included mobile plug that plugs into a 12-volt DC outlet in an automobile, or can be powered using the AC adapter for the PSOne itself! Audio and video from the PSOne are fed into the Mobile Monitor via an AV Multi connector built into the monitor itself. (This works just like a normal RCA cable, only really short and attached to the monitor...)

The Mobile Monitor can also be used with an external Audio/Video source, with built-in stereo RCA audio-in connections and a single RCA video-in connection. The connectors are designed to switch to Auxiliary automatically if a cord is plugged into the jack, so no PSOne/Aux switches are necessary. If you wish to send the audio out to external speakers, there?s a built-in headphone jack that will allow you to do just that (or listen on headphones, alternatively). Actually, that might not be a bad idea. The speakers in the unit aren?t horrible, but they?re not far from it. With the room in the design to install speakers, that?s to be expected, I suppose, but it?s decent enough to listen to for a while. When my car radio went on the fritz, I threw some CDs into my PSOne and listened to them for a trip that lasted more than two hours, and I?m still alive to tell the tale, so it?s not that bad -- but you wouldn?t choose to listen to the Mobile Monitor speakers over another option.

On the other hand, the picture is exceptionally nice for a 5 inch screen. Additionally, when coupled with a PSOne, you can have games when you?re parked and tunes when you?re driving -- just amp the headphone output and send it to your speakers. Want to run a PS2 in your ride, but don?t want it to be real visible? Install the PSOne with the Mobile Monitor within view and a PS2 out of sight. Then, just send your video into the PSOne?s monitor and it looks like you?re playing a PSOne unless someone pays attention to the specific game you?re playing.

Drawbacks & Problems::

A 5 inch screen is just that... 5 inches. And everyone knows what they say about monitors: size matters. However, with a PSOne and InterAct?s Mobile Monitor, you can be G-riding around with a customizable video display in sync with your tunes (Remember? The PSOne has the ?color organ? feature when playing audio CDs!), and if you?re just looking for your Tomb Raider fix next time you go camping (I mean come ON, you?re in the wilderness... she?s in the wilderness... it only makes sense, people!!!), then the Mobile Monitor?s 5 inches may be just enough to keep you sane...

...just bring headphones, okay?
