PlayStation Illustrated Interview

PART 3 IS HERE!!

Don't It Always Seem Like
Good Things
Come To An End?

So you wanna know all there is to know about the new Dukes Of Hazzard Racing For Home PlayStation game, huh? Well, here ya go, straight from Southpeak's Steve Wartofsky, Producer for Dukes Of Hazzard: Racing For Home. If you missed Part 1 or Part 2 of the interview, click to the left to view those parts. Be sure to check out our REVIEW of the game!

Special thanks goes out to duke_lover and Ray, both huge Dukes Of Hazzard fans who helped out with some of the questions. Be sure to click on their names to check out their sites dedicated to the Dukes Of Hazzard.

PSi:

How realistic will the physics model be? Are we talking real-life driving action like in Gran Turismo, a little less realistic, like in Need For Speed, or completely arcade like Hot Wheels: Turbo Racing?

SW:

Dukes is more of an arcade-style driving game, so no, our focus is very different from GT2 and the NFS series. We're also trying to appeal to a wider audience who enjoy driving games, and to newcomers to the genre as well, who don't want to lose a lot and have to deal with a long learning curve to get into a game.

PSi:

When running from the cops, we hear the ever familiar CB communication. How many characters have 'got their ears on' in DOH:RFH?

SW:

You'll hear CB communications throughout the game - it's part of our way of bringing the characters into the driving game, in a context where we didn't really have the technical opportunity to make them a part of the experience otherwise (doing real-time driving _and_ 3D character animation is a virtual impossibility at this point).

PSi:

How did you go about designing the game? Is it based on the real "Hazzard County?" Did you obtain any of the maps or drawings from the actual television series' set?

SW:

We have maps, we have drawings, we have hours of TV episodes, we have probably 300lbs of scripts from the show. Lots of research went into getting a good look and feel _from_ the TV show for the game.

PSi:

Do you see DOH: RFH as becoming a collector's item?

SW:

That one's up to the audience. It's not our goal or plan.

PSi:

For those people who do not have a Playstation, when will the PC version of the game be released? (or those of us who want to get both copies!)

SW:

We're looking at a late spring release for 2000 at this point.

PSi:

The PSX version has multi-player split-screen play. Will the PC version also offer split-screen and/or internet play?

SW:

Definitely internet play, we're currently looking into whether split-screen on the PC is fun or not. If it's do-able in a way that's fun, we'll do it. We theorize that USB should allow for more multi-player at a single computer than has previously been the case on PC, so it may be a possibility here.

PSi:

Are there any plans to re-release this game or possibly a sequel for the Playstation 2 console?

SW:

I'll let our PR and marketing dept. answer this one. BOB CHASE, SouthPeak spokesperson: The response to the game has been tremendous, and the game is doing quite well in its first week of release. We will definitely look at the possibility of doing a sequel.
