Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures is Eidos’ latest PC offering, being developed by long-time MMO developer Funcom. The game is based on the writings of Robert E. Howard, so there is plenty of material to draw from in creating this fantasy world.

Sporting highly detailed graphics, the developers are hoping to bring the lush environment of a single player experience to MMO players, something that hasn’t been seen before. The combat interface is also something slightly different. If you choose a Warrior class, for instance, you’ll see “buttons” on the bottom of your screen numbered 1, 2 and 3. When you engage in combat, these will light up corresponding to what buttons you should press and this is how you execute combos. The fighting is also in real-time, so as you press button combos, your character will be putting the smackdown on his foe. So they hope to throw a little something new into the standard MMO mix. During the demo I saw, players could also engage in drunken fighting among themselves, which was pretty amusing to watch.

Players will travel across 30 regions spread throughout the three nations of Aquilonia, Stygia and Cimmeria and will battle it out in dangerous jungles, mountainous terrain, sweltering deserts, dark dungeons and bustling cities. Not only will they have to contend with other players and NPC’s, but also with environmental hazards as well, so be prepared for intense Player vs. Player vs. Environment action.

Touting a Mature rating, a first for MMO’s, Age of Conan hopes to slash, crush and demolish it’s way into the hearts of gamers everywhere on October 30th. Are you barbarian enough to handle it?
