OPERATION:

Watch That First Frame, It's A Killer...

DATE: 2003-06-05 16:28:56

With the debut of Fatal Frame last year, Tecmo gave gamers an interesting take on the survival horror genre. There were no guns, nor evil corporations testing super weapons -- it was just a girl, her camera and a hellishly freaky story. In hopes of building upon the success of the previous game, Tecmo announced that it will be releasing Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly for the PS2 later this year.

Like many of it's titles at E3, Tecmo is releasing very few details -- hoping to keep many of the game's aspects a surprise for gamers. What is known is that Tecmo is pulling out all the stops to make sure that the sequel is even more terrifying as the first. Or, in the words of Tecmo's John Inada, '...the psychologically disturbing atmospheres and unique camera combat system, the new mysteries, story line, and sheer terror that surrounds Fatal Frame 2 promises to rile your nerves and keep you up at night.'

This time around, players will take on the role of Mio Amakura, a young girl with a gift of a strong sixth sense. Mio's journey takes her to a town where she and her twin sister, Mayu, spent many of their childhood years. While wandering around the town, Mayu notices a faintly glowing crimson butterfly. Feeling compelled to follow the butterfly, Mayu chases it into a dark forest. After seeing her sister's strange behavior, Mio decides to follow as well. This journey soon leads the duo to a deserted village, setting the mood for the rest of their adventure.

Considering that the last title as dubbed one of the scariest games of all times by many critics (a claim I agree with), survival horror fans should be in for a real treat with Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly.
