OPERATION:

The Next Iteration In Futuristic Sports

DATE: 2003-05-21 22:47:13

Back in the summer of '02, we got a very early look at this futuristic sports game. Needless to say, the graphics were bad and the gameplay was extremely incomplete. However, this E3 we got a newer look at Nexagon, and it is apparent that the developers have been working their asses off to get it up to where it is now.

For those of you who are new to this incredible sport of the future, let's catch you up to speed. It is the 44'th century, and instead of finding a new entertainment venue, civilization has resurrected the idea of letting criminals fight to the death for the enjoyment of the crowd. As the manager of one of these ruthless teams, you recruit new teammates, build your home base, and fight your way to freedom.

The unique thing about Nexagon is the home base feature called the sanctum. Each team has a unique sanctum that they create and attach to either side of an arena when they fight. This base houses your most precious artifact, and if the enemy is lucky enough to find their way into the center and destroy it, you instantly lose. But you are not without defenses here. Not only can you buy units, but you can also purchase traps and weapon defenses, along with various types of structures to fortify your position.

With a fully 3D and completely destructible environment, Nexagon could have what it takes to make it big this summer. The depth for gameplay is there, and all that is needed is positive consumer feedback. Keep a close eye out for new titles this summer, as Nexagon could be leading the pack.
